META Tags: Their Function and Purpose in SEO
META tags are snippets of html code surrounded by the surrounding text, which help direct the search engine when indexing your site and when determining your rank on the search engine results page. The title tag is visible to people visiting your site and is displayed on the top bar of the web page on the left hand side opposite the buttons that are used to minimize, and close the page. The description tag should be one to two sentences of descriptive information about the page.
Keyword tags are the ten to fifteen most important keywords on the page; the importance of the keyword tag is minimal as there is basically no value to the keywords tag anymore. This is a result of “black hat” optimization experts stuffing websites with keywords but not having any understandable content. Generally good coding and developing rules to follow are to plan on putting in 10-15 relevant keywords and put in the most relevant keywords.
If you are going to put in your own site search function many times that will pull from your Meta tagging so be careful. You never know when the algorithms are going to change again and the search engines are going to start giving more prominence back to the keyword so if you’ve done it right the first time you don’t have to go back later on and do it again.
